CIEH Level 2 Award in Manual Handling – Principles and Practice
Manual handling training is an essential part of the core training for any person who moves other people or objects regularly within their work. The HSE state that handling injuries are the most common kind, accounting for 1/3 of all work place injuries. In 2011-12 alone there were 30,663 handling injuries to employees, of which over 90% resulted in over 3 days leave. In 2011-12 an estimated 1.2 million working days were lost due to handling injuries.

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Manual Handling – Principles and Practice course is a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health approved course. The course covers the theory behind safe manual handling and the principles that should be put into place when partaking in manual handling activities, and then gives delegates the opportunity to put these principles into practice. The course is relevant to anyone who may have to manually move or handle a load, whether this be a person or an inanimate object. The course is 1 day long, the first half of the course focuses on the principles behind safe manual handling and the afternoon is spent learning techniques and practicing safe manual handling. At the end of this course delegates should be able to adopt safe manual handling practices and therefore reduce the risk of harm.
